Measles Initiative
The Measles initiative is the joint effort of the American Red Cross, US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, United Nations Foundation, UNICEF and the World Health Organization to cut deaths from measles by 90% by the year 2010 (based on statistics from 2000). Measles is a highly contagious disease, spread through respiration, which can cause blindness and pneumonia. Measles kills almost 345,000 people a year, and most victims are less than five years old. Although measles has been virtually nonexistent in the United States, the virus still infects millions of people in other parts of the world. However, measles is an easily preventable disease. In fact, the vaccine costs less than one dollar. The measles initiative has vaccinated over 217 million children and cut dealth from measles by 75% in five years. Because of the Measles Initiative's success in Africa, the Initiative has also expanded in Asia where 35 million more children could be saved.
The Santa Cruz County Red Cross Youth Services program designs and implements creative ways to fulfill the Initiative to save lives, one dollar at a time.
